Intelligent, Rugged 4G LTE Gateway
The Industry's First Truly Rugged LTE Device
With 4G LTE mobile broadband connectivity, the AirLink GX440 is designed for use in mobile environments (mobile office, field service, public safety) or fixed/portable settings (security, enterprise, point-of-sale) where the highest data rates are required. A powerful ARM 11 class micro-processor (5x the processing power of previous AirLink devices) and the addition of an expansion slot, leave room for growth via support for additional connection or communications options and future technologies.
Powered by ALEOS™ embedded intelligence and managed by the AirLink Management Services, the GX440 is a “one device fits all” solution that allows customers to deploy and manage the same device for multiple applications, simplifying deployment and management.
Certified and available three North American LTE networks: AT&T, Verizon Wireless and Rogers Communications.
Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) today announced a 4G LTE multi-purpose wireless gateway that leverages the power of the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network. The Sierra Wireless AirLink™ GX440 – the first 4G version of the recently announced AirLink GX400 – delivers the higher bandwidth required by applications including high-quality wireless video surveillance, multi-data-stream wireless connections to branch locations, or mobile office applications for public safety and field service activities. Sierra Wireless is showcasing the AirLink GX440 gateway in the Sierra Wireless stand (1670) at CTIA Wireless, which runs until March 24 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. The AirLink GX440 gateway is expected to be available in the second half of this year.
To help facilitate the 3G-to-4G transition, Sierra Wireless also announced a technology upgrade program that will reduce customer risk by allowing customers to purchase an AirLink GX400 3G gateway now and upgrade to the AirLink GX440 when it becomes available.
“Deploying M2M applications on the Verizon Wireless network offers customers a compelling combination of a wide coverage footprint and high bandwidth capable of supporting data-heavy applications like video surveillance or multiple end users,” said Emmanuel Walckenaer, Senior Vice President, Solutions and Services for Sierra Wireless. “The combination of the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network and the high capacity, extensible platform provided by the AirLink GX440 gateway, will enable customers to deploy robust enterprise and M2M solutions that can grow with their business needs.”
The AirLink GX440 maintains the design innovations pioneered by the AirLink GX400, including high-performance, military-spec rugged hardware and advanced configuration options that enable future enhancements to both hardware and software. Processing performance has been improved five-fold compared to previous product generations by integrating an ARM 11-class microprocessor architecture and high-capacity DDR memory into the design. This leading-edge hardware architecture provides the performance headroom needed to exploit the new applications that 4G bandwidth makes possible.
“Business customers are ready to implement the new applications that are made possible by the combination of 4G LTE and machine-to-machine connectivity,” said Janet Schijns, Vice President, Business Solutions for Verizon Wireless. “The Sierra Wireless AirLink GX440 gateway will provide a well-rounded enterprise and M2M solution, with robust hardware, comprehensive remote configuration and management capabilities, all together with the power of the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network and Verizon’s robust machine to machine offerings.”
In addition to the hardware features, the AirLink GX440 offers cloud-based, one-to-many remote device management using Sierra Wireless’ AirLink Management Services (AMS), based on the AirVantage™ Platform, which reduces maintenance costs and drives down the overall cost-of-ownership. Large and small deployments are able to take advantage of the comprehensive configuration and management features from any location with Internet access.
Technology Evolution Upgrade Program
To provide an additional incentive for customers to opt for a 4G device sooner rather than later, Sierra Wireless has established a Technology Evolution Upgrade Program for customers interested in the AirLink GX Series. The program offers the advantages of moving to the next 3G performance level – including the cloud-based remote management so important for M2M applications – while still being able to upgrade to 4G in the near term with a minimal additional investment. Customers purchasing an AirLink GX400 3G gateway now can upgrade to the AirLink GX440 when it becomes available in the second half of this year. Due to an aggressive schedule from Sierra to get the GX400 AT&T version device shipped as soon as possible and a couple of wrinkles that need to be smoothed out, Sierra is moving the planned ship date of this device back from September 30th to October 31st. There are no specific details that we have to share. The items of concern are a couple of those smaller items that are best taken care of up front rather than recover from later. Unfortunately it takes time to diagnose, fix and test these items. Sierra is working to get the product out as quickly as they can but do expect that to be at the end of October.

Vancouver, Canada - September 14, 2010
Pulse Energy, a leading provider of energy management solutions, and Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR – TSX: SW) have collaborated to deliver cutting edge cellular deployments that enable customers to more efficiently monitor and manage energy usage.
Sierra Wireless provides a broad portfolio of high performance mobile computing and M2M (machine-to-machine) products, including mobile broadband modems, embedded wireless modules, and intelligent gateways and routers. Pulse Energy’s portfolio consists of hardware and software, that when combined create an end-to-end energy management deployment.
The combined solution consists of an AirLink intelligent gateway connected to the Pulse Connector, which transmits metering data over a cellular carrier network to Pulse Energy for benchmarking and analysis. By integrating the Sierra Wireless AirLink intelligent gateways, powered by ALEOS™ intelligence, with the Pulse™ Connector, Pulse Energy has created an environment where customers can deploy a sophisticated energy management solution without having to run new data cabling or install additional IT infrastructure. Once the solution is deployed, data is analyzed and archived, allowing end customers to monitor energy usage and efficiency in real-time with the Pulse™ Web Application, a Software as a Service (SaaS) tool. In addition to the ability to manage their energy remotely from anywhere in the world with the Pulse™ Web Application, customers and Pulse Energy can configure and manage the Sierra Wireless AirLink devices with a comprehensive suite of AirLink device management tools, which minimizes field visits and enhances overall solution availability.
The 3G solution has already been deployed at several customer sites, including Waterfront Properties, owned by Cadillac Fairview, one of North America's largest investors, owners and managers of commercial real estate. The combined solution greatly reduced installation times and the total cost of ownership of the energy management solution. “We are very pleased with how we have been able to track our energy usage in real-time and were pleasantly surprised at how quickly the solution was deployed, thanks to eliminating the need for wired data lines,” remarked Alison Kirk-Owen, Energy Specialist at Cadillac Fairview.
“Working with Pulse Energy allows Sierra Wireless to promote an end-to-end energy management solution to our customers and partners,” said Justin Schmid, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, AirLink for Sierra Wireless, “This enables our customers to deploy the solution more easily, reducing implementation time and cost.”
According to Graham Cunliffe, a Systems Engineer at Pulse Energy, “We had tried other wireless solutions in the past, but were met with nothing but connectivity issues. We required a minimal amount of time to integrate the AirLink intelligent gateways from Sierra Wireless with our system, allowing our engineering team to focus on the energy solution as opposed to dealing with connectivity issues. We look forward to many more deployments of the combined Pulse Energy/Sierra Wireless solution.”

One piece of the wireless industry that doesn't get much attention is an area that analysts and vendors alike expect will generate more in the coming year. Toward that end, Junxion added a remote management feature to its product, something that it didn't initially envision. That helps when enterprise clients need to make large-scale adjustments in networks spread over a large geographic area, such as transit systems, notes Corbin Gerard, principal at Mobile ID Solutions, a Junxion reseller." Full article from: Wireless Week. |
Junxion Complete Transit Solutions customer's are featured in the February/March 2007 of Metro-Magazine. AC Transit, King County Trasit and Capital Metro talk about both the turn-key installad solutions and the self install solutions created by Junxion Complete.
When it comes to luring prospective customers out of their cars, more and more agencies are taking the Wi-Fi route — equipping their vehicles to enable passengers to wirelessly access the Internet.
Oakland, Calif.-based AC Transit equipped about 80 MCI coaches from its TransBay fleet with Wi-Fi service. The fleet carries AC's ideal demographic from Oakland's Alameda and Contra Costa counties across three bridges, the Bay into San Francisco, the San Mateo, where companies such as Oracle and Visa are located, and the Dumbarton to Stanford University.
Like AC Transit, Seattle's King County Metro Transit also has a built-in set of choice-rider routes that service the University of Washington and Microsoft. Just to be sure, Larry Calter, IT manager for King County, says the agency tested Wi-Fi service on both long and short routes.
Capital Metro, like the UTA, also tested the network coverage of several providers to see what would work best for the system before deciding which to use. Du Charme adds that just because it chose one provider to cover a certain area does not necessarily mean that the agency would use that same provider for future installations on other routes.
The cost for transit vehicle Wi-Fi at this point is relatively cheap, averaging somewhere between $1,000 and $2,000 per bus to install, as well as a monthly access card fee of around $50 to $60.
